Prototypes (2025)
These works are a return to a photographic form of objecthood. The photographs used are some of my earliest 8”x10” negatives, reinterpreted in the analog darkroom through experimentation with printing techniques utilizing expired photo paper from the 1940’s-1970’s.
The images are simultaneously self contained and whole, often suggesting an inner luminosity, yet they visually spread out infinitely beyond the edges of the photograph, the mount, frame, wall.. One’s gaze is alternately pulled in and pushed back outwards, absorbed and dispersed over a series of layered material surfaces. The physical prints are triple mounted and layered in a way that they become sculptural reliefs.
These works serve as a reevaluation of my earliest photographs, but also as a brief departure from reality to descend into visual chaos. They are an attempt to reconsider the importance of the ‘photograph as object’ by suspending awareness of content by drawing attention to the thing itself.
